Bubba Smith, ex campione del football statunitense diventato attore di Hollywood, è scomparso ieri a 66 anni. È stato trovato senza vita nella sua casa di Baldwin Hills a Los Angeles, non sono note le circostanze o la causa della morte, ma non sembrano destare sospetti.
Come attore, il suo ruolo più memorabile resta quello di Moses Hightower, il pacato e gentile ufficiale della serie "Scuola di polizia". Smith ha intrapreso la carriera di attore, con piccoli ruoli al cinema e in televisione, a fine anni '70. Vari altri film all'attivo, tra cui nel 1987 "Balle spaziali" di e con Mel Brooks e nel 1993 in "Il silenzio del prosciutti" diretto e interpretato da Ezio Greggio. È anche apparso in diverse serie televisive, tra cui "Charliès Angels", "Sabrina - vita da strega", "8 sotto un tetto", "Tuono blu".
Alto più di due metri, Smith, prima di diventare attore ha avuto una carriera sensazionale nel ruolo di defensive end sui campi da football. Ha iniziato presso la squadra della Michigan State University, poi ha trascorso cinque stagioni con i Baltimore Colts, due con Oakland e due con Houston. Nel 1971 ha vinto il Super Bowl con i Colts. «Era una persona splendida. Era un gigante, il più grande giocatore in campo» lo ha ricordato il proprietario dei Colts, Jim Irsay. Gli fa eco un suo ex compagno di squadra del Michigan State, Robert Viney: «Era semplicemente un bravo ragazzo, la sua corporatura lo rendeva intimidatorio, ma era un vero gentiluomo. Wednesday, former NFL football player and “Police Academy” actor Bubba Smith was found dead.
ESPN reported that Smith was found dead at his Los Angeles home at the age of 66. It was assumed that he died of natural causes and no foul place was involved. L.A. Times reported that the L.A. County coroner’s office will decide Thursday whether to perform an autopsy.

The 6’7” NFL defensive lineman was the top draft pick in 1967. Over the course of his football career, he spent five seasons with the Baltimore Colts– helping them win the Super Bowl in 1971– two seasons with the Oakland Raiders and two seasons with the Houston Oilers before retiring at the end of the 1976 season.New York Times.
Smith was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and Michigan State retired his number 95 in 2006.
Following his successful career in sports, Smith turned to another career, acting. He was best known for his role in “Police Academy” where he played Moses Hightower. Smith also appeared in other television shows like “Blue Thunder,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Married With Children” and “Good Times,” among others.
